Select historic buildings throughout Hartford will be lit up at nighttime to highlight their special character and unique beauty. Our first stop is the former Fire District No. 1 Station located at 58 Bridge Street, now home to the Main Street Museum.
The No. 1 Station was constructed in 1893 and served a two-square mile fire district – the first in White River Junction. It was raised four feet in 1913 to accommodate a new iron bridge across the White River. In 1919, the height of the building was increased to add a second-story tenement for the Fire Chief and a tower for drying hoses. The No. 1 Station remained a fire house until 1978 when the new station was built. The Main Street Museum purchased the building in 2003, renovating it for artist studios, a library and a museum space.
Did you know?
Hartford has nine historic districts that include an extraordinary number of buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, currently over 500 and growing! Many of these structures are hundreds of years old. These historic resources tell the stories of our town, our families, and how we live our lives today. All of these buildings and sites represent our heritage and contribute to the unique look and feel of our villages and neighborhoods. Please help us celebrate!
In May, a walking tour of Wilder Village will be scheduled. Stay tuned. Once a date is selected, posters will follow.
